A track chart of Norwood Yard in Green Bay, Wis.

Andy Laurent shared this undated chart of the tracks at Norwood Yard, the headquarters of the Green Bay & Western Railroad.  the main tracks were tightly pinned in by Twelfth Avenue on the west and Ashland Avenue on the east.  Train crews often had to assemble trains using several of the yard tracks -- the railroad even included interconnected air hoses between the tracks to allow the trains to load the air brakes while the train was still separate cuts of cars.

Norwood Yard had several landmarks.. among them:

• The Strid Grain elevator dominated the yard, and the near west side of Green Bay.  Up until the 1980s, the elevator had a large GREEN BAY ROUTE herald high on the elevator and light up at night.
• The brick machine shop with it's SAFETY FIRST banner over the west doors was prominent from Twelfth Avenue, my favorite spot to watch GBW crews assemble trains in  the yard.
• The paint shop, with its curved roof and a GREEN BAY ROUTE herald over the car door entrance, stood out when approaching Norwood on Clinton Avenue from the east.
